Want To Give Back? Consider Doing Some Volunteer Work

There’s an old saying, You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” Many find this to be as true in business as it is in life.

Almost all of us would like to do more volunteer work and invest more time into social connections or networking. But after an exhausting day, we just want to head home to switch our brains off on the couch or in front of the TV. If you can push yourself a little, forget about the sofa and regularly participate in some sort of act of kindness – no mandatory amount required. Sometimes just making some tweaks to a client’s website that you think will lead to higher conversions, or writing a blog article for them just because the topic was on your mind is all the doctor ordered. Studies have shown that companies that do pro bono and charitable work continue to do it because it boosts the company’s reputation in the community, sharpens and hones their trade, and allows them to connect with so many new networking opportunities that could generate business while also creating a positive marketing boost. We here at Mojo Media try to commit to at least one pro bono project a year, and we encourage other small businesses to do the same.

How do you know where to begin?

Business owners should think about the causes that are important to them, analyze the ways that their business contributes to those causes (if any), then look for local organizations that might be a good fit. “Approach them and ask, ‘How can we help?” Put the offer out there, and you should be able to find ways that your business expertise can benefit the local charities.
